Our Words Heal: The Ripples We Cannot Yet See – ROC Video

At Radical Optimist Collective, we believe healing begins by holding two truths at the same time: pain and possibility. In our contribution to Our Words Heal, we reflect on what it means to be radically optimistic—not as a denial of suffering, but as a commitment to moving through it. As shared in the film, radical optimism requires us to face pain directly while remaining connected to the possibility of change, growth, and healing.

Over the years, we have witnessed this truth in Montgomery and in communities across the United States. Healing often begins when people are given space to name their experiences, understand the impact of trauma, and reconnect with themselves and one another. It is not a solitary process. Healing happens in relationships. It happens when people feel seen, heard, and valued. It happens when communities create spaces where people can show up fully as themselves, without shame and without leaving parts of their identity behind.

One of our favorite moments in the film is the reminder that we are “spark people.” We light sparks without always knowing where the flame will go. That is the nature of this work. A conversation, a gathering, a story, or a moment of connection can create ripples that extend far beyond what we can see. While we may never fully know the impact of those moments, we trust that they matter.

The voices featured in Our Words Heal remind us that healing is both personal and collective. When people are supported in their own healing, they create new possibilities for their families, neighborhoods, organizations, and communities. As the film reminds us, “Those ripples are making change even if we don’t see them.”

We are grateful to the partners, community leaders, and participants who continue to show what becomes possible when people are invited into spaces of honesty, connection, and healing. We invite you to watch the full video and reflect on the ways healing has created ripples in your own life and in the communities you call home.
